Daily Humming is Good For You

jiminy_cricket.jpg New research suggests that humming can relieve chronic sinusitis by vibrating the nasal passages and increasing oxygen flow to the sinuses. During humming, the gas exchange between the nasal passages and the sinuses is 98 percent, almost a complete exchange. During normal exhalation, without humming, the gas exchange rate is only 4 percent.

siinusitisPoor gas exchange and poor circulation in the sinus cavities create a good environment for bacterial growth. Researchers suggest that daily humming could help reduce the incidence of sinusitis and upper respiratory infections.

Also, sinuses are major producers of nitric oxide, which helps dilate capillaries and increase blood flow. When nitric oxide levels are measured during humming, researchers find that they are 15 times higher than during normal breathing.

"The data presented here indicate that humming is an extremely effective means of increasing sinus ventilation. In fact, in our model system, almost the entire volume (96%) of a normal maxillary sinus (20 ml) was exchanged in a single exhalation during phonation, as compared with less than 4% during quiet exhalation."  Am J Respir Crit Care Med 02;166(2):131-2

Chronic sinusitis is a major problem for many people.  It can take the form of low level, chronic post nasal drip producing sore throats, indigestion, bronchial irritation or can result in recurring severe sinus infections, often requiring antibiotics.  Many times surgery is suggested to clear "blocked sinuses."  This study suggests that one way of improving the air circulation in the sinuses is as simple as humming.

In my experience if you experiment with humming you can actually feel different tones will vibrate different areas within your head.  This is well understood in the yoga  tradition.  Try open mouth and closed mouth, and moving your tongue back and forward with different tones of the musical scale until you feel what is vibrating areas of your sinuses which feel congested.

fungal_sinusitis.jpgSeveral related studies done at Mayo Clinic have shown that 1. over 90% of people with chronic sinusitis culture positive for fungus in their sinuses and 2. chronic fungal sinusitis causes major upset in the immune system which can even be the cause of some cases of chronic fatigue.  Dr. William Shaw of the Great Plains Laboratories has shown the biochemical connections between the toxins produced by chronic low level fungal infections and many disease states.  The chemical toxins can be found in the urine and these tests can be used to follow treatment.  In many cases there are non-toxic, non-prescription treatments that are as effective as prescription drugs.

And remember the Neti pot!  This is one of the best ways to clear sinuses. If you have allergies, blocked sinuses or a cold, try using a Neti pot.  Many people have found great relief.  I often recommend the addition of one of a number of anti-fungal or antimicrobial products to the salt water solution.  The next step up is the Hydropulse, which is like a water pic with a nasal attachment.  It makes sinus irrigation much quicker and easier and has the added effect of pulsing action. You can purchase it here -- I have never found it discounted.

Many cases of sinusitis are related to food or other allergens .  Often discovering the source of the allergy and eliminating it if possible or desensitizing from it will greatly improve sinus complaints.  Some people report relief using proteolytic enzymes.  This may be because they can help reduce the exposure to foreign proteins in food.

Spinal adjusting can often have a profound impact on opening sinuses through stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system.  Most sinus work by stimulating the sympathetic nervous system which also accounts for their side effects.  Stuck vertebrae or a disc herniation can interfere with the normal function of the cranial nerves.  Chiropractic can correct this by restoring normal function.

Try humming. If you still need help, call my office for an appointment. I will find the source of your problem and help you find a practical solution.  I think the kind of humming here is more like toning or chanting Om which really vibrates the sinuses.
