Health Comes From Within
Even in the case of infectious disease, the health of the body is
usually more important than external exposure. We all know
people who seem to get every cold that comes along while
others with the same exposure never get ill. We have all
grown up under the influence of a mechanical disease model
inherited from Louis Pasteur. But this model says nothing
about the importance of the state of health of the immune system. Marcel
Beauchamp lived at the time of Pasteur and had the idea that
what was going on inside the body is at least as important
as what we are exposed to from the outside. He talked about
the importance of the interior mileau, the health environment
inside the body, which either supports or resists infection.
The pendulum of scientific thought seems to be swinging back
towards supporting the healing process.
This is not to say that drugs such as antibiotics are never needed.
Mainstream medicine is now recognizing that antibiotics are used
much too frequently. One consequence is that bacteria are
becoming increasingly more resistant to even the new,
powerful and increasingly toxic antibiotics. And conventional
medicine is silent about building immune strength before
exposure.
Health is Your Birthright
Our ancestors were the survivors - those who had weak immune systems
probably didn't live long enough to pass on their genes. Our
bodies have evolved to be self repairing to a remarkable
extent. In the medical literature there is at least one case
in which someone has had a complete remission from every
disease including metastatic cancer without medical
intervention. It is common experience that when you cut your finger
or even break a bone, healing occurs without our having any
thought. All we have to do is support the tissues and allow
them to heal. But very weak or debilitated or nutrient
deficient people heal much more slowly. So if you are having a
health problem, the question is: where is the block in the
normal healing process? And the function of the doctor is to
find the block and help the body overcome it.
Balancing the Sides of the Triangle
The triangle of health is a way of thinking about where blocks to
healing can occur: It is also a convenient way of thinking
about overall stress - challenges to the normal functioning
of the body.
STRUCTURAL BALANCE
This includes mechanical stresses and their effects on body structure and the nervous system.
Balance is the key.
In modern society we tend to sit too much and exercise too little.
And then we do too much on a weekend.
Applied Kinesiology is used to detect and correct imbalances in opposing muscles.
Muscle imbalances can be caused by injury, mental tension or referral from internal organs.
BIOCHEMICAL BALANCE
Imbalances caused by too much or too little of key chemicals in the body can cause disease.
The body requires a wide variety of nutrients in the right amounts to function.
Too much or too little of anything, even water, can cause disease.
Our food supply has been radically changed by the industrialization
of agriculture over the past century. This results in gross
imbalances - for the most part too many calories especially
as carbohydrates (sugar, corn syrup, white breads), too few
vitamins and minerals and an alarming imbalance between omega
3 and omega 6 fatty acids.
Poor dietary choices, beginning in infancy, results in overgrowth of
semi-pathogenic bacteria and fungus in the gut (stomach, small
and large intestines) which breaks down the natural barrier
between undigested and partially digested food. Food proteins
leaking into the bloodstream are recognized as foreign
protein and attacked by the immune system resulting in
allergies.
We are all exposed to thousands of man-made toxic chemicals and heavy
metals. There is good evidence that these are stored in the
body, are found in every American and have serious health
consequences, in mental health, immune function and hormonal
imbalance.
Clinical nutrition offers solutions by suggesting better food choices,
making up for deficiencies caused by imbalances in the food
supply and addressing the need for detoxification and
specific supplementation to deal with more complex
biochemical imbalances.
MENTAL/EMOTIONAL/SPIRITUAL BALANCE
There is increasing evidence and a growing
recognition that how we feel, what we think and our sense of
connection with a larger reality have a direct and profound
influence on the physical body.
It is no secret that life in our society is stressful. Everything around
us is changing at an exponentially accelerating rate. How
long can this go on? How can we keep up? We are constantly at
the mercy of new and unexpected threats to physical,
financial, and emotional well being, and there is the sense
that there are probably things we should be worrying about
but just don't know about yet. These fears are amplified by the
media. At the same time family, social and religious structures are
fragmenting. More and more people find themselves without good
social support. Studies show a very direct link between the
mind and body -mostly through the autonomic nervous system -
that part of the nervous system that controls breathing,
heart rate, blood pressure and digestion, but also secretion
of all hormones and overall muscle tone.
Like everything else, stress is a matter of balance. Boredom is
stressful. The worst punishment we give criminals next to
execution is solitary confinement. Each person has an optimal
amount of stimulation. Too much or too little is stressful.
Too much stress directly affects every organ system - reducing immune
function, increasing blood sugar, decreasing healing, weakening
joints, and on and on.
Because stress acts on the physical body through the autonomic nervous
system Kinesiology can monitor the effects of thought as it
affects muscle stretch reflexes. For this reason it can be
used to monitor the effect of any technique that shifts the
stress pattern.
ENERGETIC BALANCE
The energy balance of the body is represented by the Tai Yin symbol
in the center of the triangle. Body energy or Qi flows through
the electromagnetic structure of the physical body and unites
all three sides of the Triangle of Health .
- Imbalances in any side of the triangle can affect the other two sides.
- Imbalances in any part of the triangle can disturb the flow of Qi
through the meridian system. This can be measured
electronically and corrected using the tools of acupuncture
and Kinesiology.
- Meridian energy is closely coupled with the autonomic nervous
system. So most people in our society are out of
balance.
- We are continually bombarded by man-made electromagnetic energy.
No
other generation in history has had this level of exposure
and the level of exposure continues to increase. Our homes
and offices are inside the electromagnetic grid of the
electrical power system, switching on and off 60 times a
second. Computers, cell phones, electric motors, copying
machines, microwave ovens, radio and television stations all
send out electromagnetic radiation.
There is now clear evidence that electromagnetic radiation
has harmful effects even at relatively low doses but we
really don't understand how it causes harm or what is really
safe. My clinical experience is that people who are healthy, have energy
and vitality, are better able to tolerate the unavoidable
stresses of electromagnetic pollution.
