A patient came to see me for headaches. She mentioned that 15 years ago she fell off a high stage badly spraining both ankles. Since then she had pain any time she stood for even a short amount of time. Her ankles hurt while she stood to cook dinner. She couldn't wear high heels. When I tried to move the ankles through their normal motions I found stiffness in what is called the ankle mortise, the big joint joining the shin bone (tibia) to the foot (talus) and pain over the anterior talo-tibial ligament, the strap of connective tissue holding this joint together.
